Your face shape plays a big role in choosing the best hairstyle. Should you try long waves or a short, close-cut style? Maybe you want a cute, boyish look. It’s important to think carefully so your hairstyle highlights your face shape. Whether you want a center part, side part, or new bangs, make sure the style you pick for 2025 suits your face type. Start by understanding your face shape to find the perfect look.

3 Steps to Determine Your Face Shape

To figure out your face shape, you’ll want to look at three key criteria:

#1. Start with the widest part of your face: your forehead, cheeks, and jaw.
#2. Is your jawline round, square, or pointy?
#3. The length of your face—is it short or long? There’s more information in the breakdown below.

I also reached out to some of my favorite hairstylists. They shared their thoughts on different hairstyles. They explained how each style suits the six common face shapes and the reasons why.

#1 The Diamond Face Shape

Sally Hershberger NOMAD hairstylist Scott Fabian suggests that people with diamond-shaped faces and long hair should try a middle part or add curtain bangs. This makes the forehead look wider. Diamond faces usually have a narrow forehead, he explains. If you have medium-length hair, Fabian says to add layers. Layers highlight your cheekbones and open up your face in the right areas, making your forehead appear broader. For short hair, he recommends a chin-length bob or a textured pixie cut with a longer fringe.

Serge Normant John Frieda hairstylist Matt Fugate explains that diamond-shaped faces are less common. “They are similar to oval and round faces and usually easy to style. The goal is to add strength around the jawline to make the face appear less pointed.” For long hair, Fugate suggests adding layers that frame the jaw. “A sharp, clean bob like Lucy Hale’s can make the jawline look stronger, even if it isn’t naturally defined,” he says.

#2 Heart Face Shape

Fabian recommends highlighting your cheekbones if you have a heart-shaped face. “For longer hair, add soft, short layers to make your cheekbones stand out,” he says. If your hair is medium or short, he suggests adding textured, playful layers for movement, similar to Miley’s new mullet style.

Fugate explains that heart-shaped and oval faces usually look the best. “They are the most balanced, so almost any haircut works well,” he says. People with these face shapes have an advantage. For other face shapes, Fugate tries to design haircuts that make the face look more even.

#3 The Oval Face Shape

Fabian recommends adding face-framing layers if you have long hair and an oval face. This highlights your bone structure. “Oval faces look good with almost any hairstyle,” he says. “But very long layers might make your face appear longer.” A medium-length hairstyle works great for oval faces. If you don’t like long hair, explore our pixie cuts and other short hairstyles.

#4 The Round Face Shape

Fabian suggests that if you have a round face and long hair, choose longer layers. This helps make your face look longer and less round. For medium or short hair, he recommends a side part. If you want to add bangs or curtain bangs, keep the layers around your face longer. This can help make your face look slimmer.

Fugate explains that if you have a round face, keeping some hair longer can make your face look slimmer. The length helps create a vertical line that draws attention downward. He recommends bobs as a good choice for round faces. He also suggests lobs and long, soft layers. Try not to get short layers around your face unless they start below your jawline. If you prefer very short hair, consider a pixie cut.

#5 The Square Face Shape

Fabian explains that this face shape works well with many styles. Celebrities like Zoe Kravitz and Taraji P. Henson have tried lots of different looks and looked amazing. If you have a square face, Fabian suggests choosing medium or long hair with short, textured layers. You can also try a bob that reaches your collarbone with side-swept bangs, or a short, bold pixie cut with edgy texture.

Fugate explains that if you have a square face, you should add many soft layers. This helps to gently cover some of the strong bone lines. He suggests styles that are loose and choppy, like curtain bangs with soft pieces or wispy strands. Shag haircuts with messy layers also work well. Think of Freja Beha Erichsen’s hairstyle. Fugate says that sharp cheekbones and jawlines look beautiful when paired with soft, flowing layers.

#6 Rectangular Face Shape

According to Fabian, a rectangular face is usually longer with more defined cheekbones. He suggests that a full fringe works well on medium to long hair to soften sharp angles. Adding layers can also create movement and make the face look less long, he explains.

Fugate explains that people with a rectangular face shape often have a larger forehead. Because of this, he usually recommends bangs. He suggests choosing bangs that are playful and flexible to suit the face length. These can be blunt for a cool Brooklyn look or longer styles that brush the eyelashes. The key is to pick bangs that make the face look smaller and slimmer.

People with rectangular face shapes can try many different hairstyles once they choose the right bangs, he says. “Whether it’s very long hair, a bob that hits the jawline, short hair, or styles in between, all can look great when you create a lovely focal point above the eyes.”
