As someone with curly hair, I have spent a lot of time looking for ways to keep my hair healthy and full of moisture. I have tried many products and techniques. Some of these I still use today. One method I recently discovered is the no-poo method for cleaning my hair and scalp. After trying it, I don’t plan to stop. No-poo simply means not using shampoo. Can washing without shampoo really clean your hair and scalp? Yes, it can. You can wash your hair without regular shampoo by using other products, even some you might find in your kitchen.

HOW TO WASH YOUR HAIR WITHOUT SHAMPOO?

Washing your hair without shampoo might seem incomplete at first. If you are new to shampoo-free hair care, you may wonder if it really works. But once you get used to it, you will notice your hair and scalp getting healthier. No poo hair care is especially good for curly and thick hair. It keeps your scalp’s natural oils, which help keep your hair soft and moisturized. Here are some other ways to clean your hair without using shampoo:

Baking soda and apple cider vinegar

Mix baking soda with water to make a paste. Gently rub this paste onto wet hair, then rinse well. Combine 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with water and use it as a rinse. Keep in mind, baking soda can irritate your scalp and change your scalp’s natural pH. Also, if you don’t rinse out the apple cider vinegar completely, it may leave a smell in your hair.

Washing with conditioner

This is the no-poo method I use. I don’t use shampoo and only apply conditioner. When my hair feels heavy or has product build-up, I wash it with my usual shampoo.

Wash with water

The easiest way to no-poo is by rinsing your hair with just water. But keep in mind, your hair might not feel very clean afterward. This natural hair wash works well if you don’t sweat much and your scalp isn’t oily. If you do, I suggest trying other methods.

BENEFITS OF SHAMPOO-FREE HAIR CARE FOR YOUR HAIR AND SCALP

  • Natural oils are retained in your hair. This is most beneficial for those with curly and coarse hair.
  • Unlike traditional shampoos, no-poo hair care minimizes the application of harmful chemicals in our hair and scalp.
  • This is a cheap alternative to your regular shampoo. Natural hair wash ingredients like baking soda and apple cider vinegar are usually found in your pantry. No need to spend on expensive shampoo.
  • Lesser commercial product consumption means lesser waste. You are taking care of your hair at the same time, taking care of the environment.
  • TIPS ON TRANSITIONING FROM SHAMPOO LIFESTYLE TO NO-POO LIFESTYLE

If you want to start a no-poo lifestyle, here are some helpful tips for making the switch from shampoo to no poo.

  • Slowly transition your way to the no-poo lifestyle. Try lessening your shampoo session until your hair and scalp are finally adjusted to no shampoo cleansing. If you shampoo every day, start doing it every other day, then every two days until you are fully comfortable with no shampoo at all.
  • Find which method works best for you. For those with oily hair and scalp, you might still need to shampoo to clean your hair. So instead of doing an all-out no-poo, maybe just lessening the shampoo session is your best fit.
  • If you have a history of skin disease or scalp irritation, consult your physician before using any no-poo method.
  • If you want to stop using shampoo and try the no-poo method, make sure to learn about it first. Research how it works and decide if it suits you. The no-poo method is mostly safe and has few risks. Still, it’s important to understand what you are doing and what benefits you can expect.
