Senegalese twists, also called rope twists, are a favorite protective hairstyle for Black women who love their natural hair. This style comes from Senegal in West Africa. It helps protect your hair for about 2 to 3 months, especially if your hair is damaged from daily styling or products. Braiding these twists usually takes 6 to 8 hours, so plan enough time. Before starting, wash and moisturize your hair well because you won’t be able to do this for a few months. You can create Senegalese twists using different braiding styles, like cornrows or crochet braids. Below, I’ve gathered some of the best Senegalese twist hairstyle ideas to inspire your next look!

How would you explain this style?

Senegalese Twists look soft and very feminine. They also take less time to put in than regular braids!

Do you have any tips for someone thinking about it?

Twists are perfect for fun, boho-style girls. If you like a smooth, neat look instead, twists might not be the best choice. They can get frizzy over time. I suggest my clients use Lotta Body’s “Wrap Me Foam Mousse” to help manage the frizz.

How would you explain this style?

Senegalese twists, also called rope twist hairstyles, come from Senegal in West Africa. They look like ropes and are a popular, stylish way to protect your hair.

This style is great because it’s very flexible. You can choose different sizes and lengths. You can wear it down, braid it into an updo, curl it, or put it in a pretty bun. It’s also faster to put in and remove than regular three-strand braids.

Do you have any tips for someone thinking about it?

This style is simple to care for and easy to handle. You can style it the same way you do your own hair. It works well for those with busy lives or anyone who wants to spend less time on their natural hair.

You only need a few products to keep it tidy. I often advise clients to care mainly for their scalp since the twists are delicate. I suggest using the Cantu Apple Cider Vinegar Root Rinse to calm the scalp and add moisture to the hair.

This hairstyle looks good on every face shape and size. If your hair is kinky, it’s easier to twist kinkier hair. For straight or silky hair, try using small sections or add kinky or Marley hair extensions to help the twists stay put. You can also try braids, as they come undone more slowly on silky hair.

These stylish twists work well for both casual outings and professional settings. Perfect for people who enjoy a relaxed and fun look!

How would you explain this style?

Senegalese twists create a softer style compared to box braids. Many of my clients choose this look because it stands out from regular braids.

I really like how everything fits perfectly at the end. From a distance, the twists seem like braids, but when you look closely, they look fantastic!

Any advice for someone thinking about trying it?

Senegalese twists are a great option for people with office jobs because they look soft and neat. They also work well if you want to try a new hairstyle. When styled, they look beautiful!

Twists work well on any hair type. However, they don’t hold up in water as well as box braids. Since twists are simply twisted hair, water can make your hair slip out, leading to frizz.

Although these twists don’t last as long as braids, my clients usually prefer them after trying. They love how the twists look and rarely go back to regular box braids.

How would you explain this style?

This style is bold. You might see someone wearing it now and then. I like how it lets you stand out and be unique.

Do you have any tips for someone thinking about it?

You should choose a style you can keep up with. First, ask yourself, “Will this look good on me?” If yes, then go for it!

How would you explain this style?

This protective hairstyle is simple to care for. It saves time, looks professional, and is perfect for vacations. You can get Senegalese twists like these in less time and for less money.

What I like most about this style is how easy it is. At night, simply put on your bonnet. In the morning, wake up and you’re ready to go.

Do you have any tips for someone thinking about it?

Did a stylist check your hair first to make sure it can handle this style? If your hair is thin, your edges are weak, or you have a receding hairline, this style might not work. Your personality and daily routine also matter when deciding if this look suits you.

This hairstyle starts with a braid as the base. Then, Senegalese twists are added by crocheting them onto the braid. It works best for thick hair with strong edges that can handle the pull of this style.
